Bio

Melissa Nunn earned her B.A. in English from University of California, Los Angeles and an M.A. in Dance Education from Northwestern University. Nunn began her performing career in Chicago as a dancer with the Fusion Dance Ensemble while also establishing herself as a dance educator on the faculty of Northwestern University. She came to SDSU in 1979 and continued performing and choreographing for her own and other companies, including Jazz Unlimited Dance Company and with jazz fusion keyboardist Rob Mullins. Her work extended to modern, jazz, and musical theatre dance performed in various venues. She published in several dance journals including Dance Magazine and presented her research in New York, Manila, and Israel for the Congress on Research in Dance, the National Dance Education Organization, and the International Dance Association. As a guest artist at the University of Heidelberg she received a support grant from SDSU. She co-founded the San Diego Area Dance alliance, which also presented her work. Since the award was inaugurated in the mid-1990s, Nunn was named Most Influential Faculty by the dance program’s Outstanding Graduating Student in seven different years before her retirement.
