Bio

Paulo Lima, known in the Capoeira world as Mestre Paulo Batuta, is a Brazilian cultural educator, performer, and community leader with over two decades of experience teaching and promoting Afro-Brazilian arts around the world. At San Diego State University, he teaches Capoeira as part of the Dance program and the Center for Brazilian Studies, blending movement, music, rhythm, and storytelling to introduce students to the rich cultural roots of Brazil.

Originally from Brazil, Mestre Paulo began his Capoeira journey as a teenager and went on to establish Capoeira de Valor San Diego, a vibrant community dedicated to preserving the art’s traditions while inspiring personal growth, discipline, and cultural connection. His classes emphasize not only the physical and musical elements of Capoeira but also its deeper values of respect, resilience, and unity.

Beyond the university, Mestre Paulo is the founder and artistic director of several cultural initiatives, including the Brazilian Festival San Diego and numerous community events that celebrate music, dance, and diversity. His work continues to bridge cultures and generations, empowering students and communities through the transformative power of movement and rhythm.
