Bio
Eddie Meadows earned a B.S. from Tennessee State University, a M.S. from the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He taught at Kentucky State University, Wiley College, and served as Assistant Professor of Music at Michigan State University before coming to San Diego State, where from 1972 through 2001 he taught a variety of courses encompassing jazz, African-American music, African music, history, ethnomusicology, and research methodology. Meadows was also an early faculty member in SDSU’s Africana Studies Department. During his career he held Visiting Lecturer and adjunct appointments at a variety of institutions including the University of Ghana, Legon, University of California, Berkeley, University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Southern California. After his time at SDSU, Meadows taught at UCLA and is now Professor Emeritus of Ethnomusicology and Jazz Studies and Adjunct Professor in Global Jazz Studies at UCLA. His publications include Jazz Scholarship and Pedagogy: A Research and Information Guide; Blues, Funk, Rhythm and Blues, Soul, Hip Hop, and Rap: A Research and Information Guide; Bebop to Cool: Context, Ideology, and Musical Identity; California Soul: Music of African Americans in the West (co-edited with Jacqueline Cogdell DjeDje); Jazz Research and Performance Materials: A Select Annotated Bibliography; and Jazz Reference and Research Materials. Additional publications include numerous articles, encyclopedia entries, and reviews.
