PERCUSSION
Undergraduate Repertoire Requirements
Applicants for admission on percussion should make a video consisting of the following three categories:
I. Mallet Instruments
Solo, etude, or study demonstrating your best technical ability and musicianship for 2 or preferably 4 mallets
- Scales: Please play 2 different major scales of your choice up and down over 2 octaves on any mallet instrument.
Suggested Repertoire for Mallets:
- One movement or solo/etude from Stout, Abe, J.S. Bach, Creston, Musser, Rosauro, or equivalent. A 4-mallet solo is preferred.
II. Snare Drum
Solo, etude, or study demonstrating your best technical ability
- Roll: Please demonstrate a long buzz roll, soft to loud and back to soft over about 10 seconds.
Suggested Repertoire on Snare Drum:
- Portraits in Rhythm, Cirone.
- Intermediate Snare Drum Studies, Peters
- Standard Snare Drum Method, Podemski
- 14 Modern Contest Solos, Pratt
III. Timpani
Solo, etude, or study demonstrating your best technical ability
- Please record yourself tuning the drums for the piece you are playing
Suggested Timpani Repertoire:
- The Solo Timpanist, Firth
- Fundamental Solos for Timpani, Peters.
- Please provide a copy of your music for the audition committee.
* If you do not have access to timpani, please play either a multi percussion piece or a second contrasting mallet piece. The audition committee would prefer timpani if possible.
Graduate and Artist Diploma Audition Requirements
- Applicants should make a video recording of four pieces. One each for snare drum, timpani, two and four mallets. Plan to perform contrasting works that best demonstrate your technical ability and musicianship.
- Please record three standard orchestral excerpts each on snare drum, timpani, xylophone, glockenspiel, and either tambourine or cymbals.
- Please provide a copy of your music for the audition committee.
* If you do not have access to timpani, please play a multi percussion piece.
