Bio
Anna Brown Massey draws from a background in North Atlantic percussive and Scottish dances to bring rhythmic attention to choreographic forms. She works intimately with sound, and frequently enlists text in conversation with movement. Her research manifests in outside installations, multi-media immersions, and dances on stages.
Anna danced for over 25 dance companies in New York City, and has received numerous grants for research in choreographic storytelling. She co-founded NACHMO (National Choreography Month), which produces hundreds of new dance artists each year through ethical resource-sharing. Anna has been on faculty at San Diego State University since 2017 and is a Research Fellow for Livable Futures. She holds an MFA in Dance from the Ohio State University. She teaches diverse methods of action, composition, and entrepreneurship.
Anna engages deeply with our local communities. She has choreographed for San Diego New Music’s annual commissioned concert and has been presented twice by Queer Mvmnt Fest as choreographer, filmmaker and panelist. DISCO RIOT has commissioned her to make new work. She has been Art Produce Artist-in-Residence. She was the yearlong Interim Director of Dance at the Bishop’s School, and has taught San Diego Dance Theater elders and Lynch Dance Institute youth. She taught for the Refugee Dance Project and choreographed the musicals Finding Oz and Working for local teenagers. At SDSU, she teaches for the Osher Institute of Lifelong Learning and is Faculty Associate of the Prison Arts Collective. Anna relishes connecting SDSU students with opportunities nearby and beyond.
