Bio

American Baritone, Travis Sherwood, has received praise for his powerful voice and emotionally poignant performances around the world as an opera singer, concert artist, and recitalist, performing a wide range of musical genres and styles.

On the operatic stage, Sherwood has performed leading roles in La Bohème, South Pacific, Gianni Schicchi, The Tempest, Hänsel und Gretel, Das Liebesverbot, Albert Herring, Don Giovanni, The Rape of Lucretia, and Die Fledermaus. Sherwood has sung for Mississippi Opera, Aspen Opera Theater, The Martina Arroyo Foundation Prelude to Performance, USC Thornton Opera, Princeton Festival, Bohème Opera, Westminster Opera Theater, Spoleto Festival USA, and was an Associate Artist with Opera New Jersey, and a Marc and Eva Stern Fellow at SongFest.

On the concert stage, Sherwood has performed with the Southwest Symphony, Chatter Orchestra, Hunterdon Symphony, Symphony of the Vines, Canto Bello Chamber Orchestra, Monroe Symphony Orchestra, and La Sierra Symphony Orchestra, performing such works as Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, Gounod’s Messe Solenelle de Sainte Cécile, Schubert’s Mass in G, Bach’s Cantata 140, Haydn’s Die Schöpfung, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, Weill’s Berliner Requiem, and creating the role of Jesus in Kata Markon by Mark Lanz Weiser. Sherwood has also enjoyed many collaborative recitals with distinguished pianists throughout the world.

Currently, Sherwood serves as Assistant Professor of Voice and Vocal Area Coordinator on the faculty of San Diego State University’s School of Music and Dance. His students have been accepted to leading graduate programs as well as won regional and district competitions. In addition, Sherwood frequently leads masterclasses as well as lectures and presents on the subjects of artistic literacy, student-centered pedagogy, voice pedagogy, and vocal literature. Sherwood previously served on the faculties of Fullerton Junior College, Mahidol University, and Eastern New Mexico University.

Sherwood holds a Doctor of Musical Arts and a Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California, Thornton School of Music; and a Bachelor of Music degree from Westminster Choir College in music education and vocal performance. Additional studies include a certificate from the Académie International d’Eté de Nice in Interprétation chant & piano under the instruction of Dalton Baldwin.
