Bio
Derek is an accomplished performer and music educator and has maintained an active performing career that includes performances with Natalie Cole, Clark Terry, Hubert Laws, The Four Tops, The Temptations, and Jon Faddis to name a few. Internationally, he has performed at The Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, The North Sea Jazz Festival in The Netherlands, The Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy, and The Montreal Jazz Festival in Canada. Derek’s recent recordings include “Free Your Mind,” - Walter Beasley - 2009, “Destiny,” - Kamau Kenyatta - 2007, and “Face in The Mirror,” Rick Helzer - 2006.
In addition to being a member of the studio faculty at San Diego State University, Derek is Director of Jazz Studies and Co-Chair of the Music Department at Grossmont College in El Cajon, CA. Mr. Cannon previously chaired the Jazz Studies Department at Chicago State University (1995-1999).
