Student Organizations
One of the most important memories that many graduates have of their college years are the experiences shared with friends having similar interests and goals. The School of Music and Dance offers a number of professional student organizations that provide important service to the school and enable individual students to develop leadership skills. Each student can make a difference and many do by participating in the following organizations or other campus clubs and entities.
SDSU enables student organizations to receive official recognition through a special process. Such organizations may be eligible for funding from Associated Students for various projects. School of Music and Dance Organizations
Collegiate Music Educators National Conference (CMENC)
The student chapter of MENC provides students who plan to become teachers of music with numerous opportunities to familiarize themselves with the profession. Music education majors are expected to participate in the organization and activities include field experiences, attendance at conference, guest lecturers and more.
Phi Mu Alpha
Phi Mu Alpha is a national music fraternity with chapters on over three hundred campuses. Selection is by invitation based upon scholarship and interest in music and membership is open to all male university students in good standing. The possibilities for participation in musical activities are limited only by the boundaries of imagination, desire, and commitment. The current officers of the chapter can be contacted through the School of Music and Dance office.
Pi Kappa Lambda National Honorary Music Society
Pi Kappa Lambda is a national honorary music society, sanctioned by the American Association of College Honor Societies. It has over 170 university chapters and in its nearly 100 year history has initiated over 46,000 musicians into membership. The society is dedicated to fostering scholarly interest in the theoretical and historical aspects of music, and to the stimulation of eminent achievement in performance, composition, music education, and music research. Membership is through selection by the faculty and is awarded to outstanding bachelor and master of music degree candidates.
Sigma Alpha Iota
Founded in 1903, the organization is an international music fraternity for women music majors and minors. Its mission is to encourage, nurture and support the art of music through its many service and advocacy projects. Sigma Alpha Iota promotes interaction among those who share a commitment to music. Members of SAI are active in all areas of campus music and campus life, working closely with faculty, administration, campus and community groups, music professionals and patrons. In addition to personal encouragement and support, members may receive scholarships, loans and awards in many areas and at all levels of music-related study.
Student National Association of Teachers of Singing (SNATS)
The National Association of Teachers of Singing has fostered the formation of student chapters in order to advance knowledge about the Association and the professions of teaching and singing. The SDSU student NATS (SNATS) Chapter is an organization of students that meet, hold events and discussions, participate, practice, and learn more about voice teaching as a profession.
Tau Beta Sigma
Tau Beta Sigma is an honorary service organization whose purpose is to serve college or university band programs through service projects, fundraisers, social events or other projects.
College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts Organizations
Civil Core of PSFA
The PSFA Civil Core is the official service and voluntary organization of the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts. Core members serve as role model students who are held to high academic standards and embody the spirit of leadership and service.
College Council
The PSFA College Council meets regularly and provides opportunities for leadership involvement, networking, student advocacy, as well as extracurricular activities and programs affecting PSFA students. It is the governing body for all students with majors and minors in the College. Membership is open to a representative from each Student Activities and Campus Life Office (SACL) recognized club or organization.
