Choral Ensembles

Open to all majors, the principal choral ensembles in the School of Music and Dance are the SDSU Chamber Choir, Aztec Concert Choir, and University Chorus (Men’s Chorus and Women’s Chorus combined). The University Chorus DOES NOT require an audition.

SDSU Chamber Choir

“Chamber Singers” MUSIC 186/386/586; MF 2-2:50pm and T/Th 2-3:15pm; 1 Unit credit

Listed in the online catalog as “Chamber Singers” the SDSU Chamber Choir (28-32 voices) is open to all majors who possess an advanced level of musical and vocal ability. It is auditioned at the beginning of each semester with year-round membership preferred, but not required. The audition will include a brief interview, vocalizing, sight-reading a short excerpt, demonstrating basic theory knowledge, and performing a short solo piece that best shows the qualities of the voice (see below for more information). The SDSU Chamber Choir is the premiere choral ensemble on campus and strives to operate at a professional level on a daily basis. This ensemble performs diverse literature in many languages, styles, and time periods from Vocal Jazz, to Renaissance polyphony, to multicultural music, to folksongs and spirituals, to major works with orchestra, to contemporary works, and premieres by living and/or student composers. The training from participating in this choir will enable graduates to enter the ranks of professional, semi-professional, and amateur/church/community choirs as strong members, paid section leaders and/or soloists, wherever they choose to have a career or a life with music in it. Participating in this ensemble will provide daily professional growth and training necessary to contribute to a vocal/choral culture after graduation and students develop life-long friendships. Collaborations with leading professional organizations and choral ensembles in and outside San Diego such as the Bach Collegium San Diego, San Diego Master Chorale, San Diego Pro Arte Voices, La Jolla Symphony Chorus & Orchestra, and others can be expected.

Please e-mail Dr. Patrick Walders, Director of Choral Studies, to schedule an audition, or sign up on the bulletin board outside of room 113 in the Music Building.

Aztec Concert Choir

“Concert Choir” MUSIC 185/385/585; MWF 1-1:50; 1 Unit credit

The Aztec Concert Choir requires and audition at the beginning of the semester and is open to all majors who possess an intermediate level of musical and vocal ability and who wish to participate in a college-level choir. It’s an excellent option for ALI (American Language Institute) and exchange students. Previous high school choral singing is helpful, but not required. Numbering between 20-60 students, this ensemble performs at least two concerts in a semester. ACC performs a wide variety of repertoire and prepares major works or special projects, usually with the SDSU Symphony Orchestra. Previous favorite performances include Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, the Fauré Requiem, the California premiere of To Be Certain of the Dawn by Stephen Paulus and the chorus in SDSU’s concert version of Les Miserábles in collaboration with the SDSU Symphony Orchestra and Theatre Department. The ACC performed Eric Whitacre’s Cloudburst with handbells and percussion with the SDSU Dance department, and Carl Orff’s famous Carmina Burana in celebration of the School of Music and Dance’s 75th Anniversary. The ACC is a good choice for students who wish to gain performing experience and knowledge in music reading and musicianship skills, and who also wish to develop an identity within the SDSU community as a whole. Rather than joining another social organization, please consider being an advocate for the Arts and find a “family” within the ranks of the CC, ACC, or UC.

University Chorus

MUSIC 170/370/570; T/TH 5:30-6:45; 1 Unit credit
* No audition required * All majors welcomed * International and ALI students welcome!

NEW IN FALL 2016! The University Chorus does NOT require an audition and is open to all majors, University staff and faculty, and is a wonderful option for a college choir experience. Community members can register via Open University and 2-year College students can register via Cross-Enrollment. This ensemble splits into a Men’s and Women’s Chorus for the first half of the semester, allowing students to explore the unique repertoire and characteristics of gender choruses and the Collegiate Glee Club tradition. In the second half of a semester, the UC performs its own repertoire and/or collaborates with ACC and CC for major choral-orchestral works or other projects such as the SDSU Downtown Concert. It’s an excellent option for ALI (American Language Institute) and exchange students too.
