Choral Ensembles

 

COVID-19 Update

SDSU Choirs will rehearse in person in Fall 2021. Rehearsals will be held in-person in our choral rehearsal hall, SMD 113. Information regarding masks and distancing, and temperature checks will be forthcoming. Students will be required to adhere to University testing policies.


Open to all majors, the principal choral ensembles in the School of Music and Dance are the SDSU Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, and University Chorus. No audition is required for University Chorus, however interested students and community members must sign up to sing an assessment with Dr. Khaefi so that they may be assigned a voice part prior to the first rehearsal.

 

 

Chamber Choir

“Chamber Singers” MUSIC 186/386/586; MF 2-2:50pm and T/Th 2-3:15pm; 1 Unit credit

Open to all students regardless of major

Chamber Choir performs 6-8 concerts annually and is the premier choral ensemble on campus. Performing literature from a vast spectrum of languages, styles, and time periods, this ensemble frequently commissions new works and hosts celebrated guest artists, clinicians, conductors from around the world. Chamber Choir alumni are currently singing with professional and semi-professional companies in the region including the San Diego Opera, Bach Collegium San Diego, San Diego Master Chorale, and Sacra/Profana, and are also enrolled in some of the nation’s most prestigious graduate programs in choral conducting and vocal performance. The ensemble tours both nationally and internationally, and performs at regional conferences curated by CMEA, and ACDA. Please contact Director of Choral Studies, Dr. Arian Khaefi, with questions.

Concert Choir

“Concert Choir” MUSIC 185/385/585; MWF 1-1:50; 1 Unit credit

Open to all students regardless of major

Concert Choir performs a wide variety of repertoire and prepares major works or special projects, usually with the SDSU Symphony Orchestra. Previous performances include Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Fauré‘s Requiem, the California premiere of To Be Certain of the Dawn by Stephen Paulus and the chorus in SDSU’s concert version of Les Miserábles in collaboration with the SDSU Symphony Orchestra and Theatre Department. Concert Choir performed Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana in celebration of the School of Music and Dance’s 75th Anniversary. Please contact Director of Choral Studies, Dr. Arian Khaefi, with questions.

University Chorus

“UChorus” MUSIC 170/370/570; T/TH 5:30-6:45; 1 Unit credit

Open to all students regardless of major, faculty, and staff. No audition required

UChorus provides students the opportunity to make friends singing in an engaging and comfortable social setting. Students in UChorus learn how to use their voices to sing with breath support, read music, and work with a conductor. Not an SDSU student? Not a problem! Community members can register through Global Campus. UChorus collaborates with community partners to present outreach concerts, and frequently collaborates with other choirs on campus in performance.
