Jacobs Music Center
About the Concert
Students and faculty representing SDSU’s Music programs will perform an evening of works including Ravel’s orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition; Viet Cuong’s Re(new)al, featuring the SDSU Percussion Quartet; a world-premiere of SDSU faculty member Brent Dutton’s Parallax Refractions; and will culminate in Beethoven’s glorious Choral Fantasy, performed by the Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, and Dr. Karen Follingstad (SDSU piano faculty), honoring the 250th year since the composer’s birth. To complete the SDSU experience, the audience will be welcomed to Copley Symphony Hall by the SDSU Marching Aztecs.
About SDSU Performance Ensembles
The SDSU Wind Symphony, under the direction of Dr. Shannon Kitelinger, is the premiere concert band at San Diego State University and open to all university wind and percussion players by audition.
As the foremost orchestral ensemble at SDSU, the Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Michael Gerdes, performs repertoire that represents many musical styles and historical contexts. Membership is determined by audition and is open to all qualified students, regardless of major.
The SDSU Chamber Choir and Aztec Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Arian Khaefi, newly appointed Director of Choral Studies at SDSU, comprise the premiere choral ensembles of the university. Performing varied literature, SDSU choral ensembles commission new works and maintain a rigorous rehearsal and performance regimen. SDSU choral ensembles tour regularly, perform at regional conferences, and choral alumni are currently singing with professional and semi-professional companies throughout the region.
The Marching Aztecs, under the direction of Bryan Ransom, is one of the premiere marching bands in the West. This highly respected campus organization performs at all SDSU home football games, as well as performing at high school band tournaments and other campus and community events. Members of the Marching Aztecs represent over 30 academic majors and hail from a wide variety of locales.
About the School of Music and Dance
“Research reveals that studying music provides students of every age with learning experiences that facilitate the development of dedication, expressive communication, discipline, collaboration, and creative problem-solving … skills that lead to success in the 21st century,” explains Dr. Scott D. Lipscomb, Director of the School of Music and Dance. “The SDSU Live Downtown concert not only provides SDSU students an opportunity to perform in an exemplary performance space, revenue from ticket sales will assist in adding to our scholarship endowment, which will support future music education students, helping us to meet the growing demand for music teachers throughout San Diego and beyond.”
The study of music was an early area of concentration at San Diego State University. Among the first seven professors hired in 1898, when the university was chartered, one was a music professor. By 1907, the Department of Music began conferring degrees, and a commitment to excellence in artistic innovation was established. The commitment fostered a long legacy of educational and musical leadership for the program. The SDSU School of Music and Dance continues to flourish into the 21st century, offering one of the most comprehensive music programs on the West coast. The SDSU School of Music and Dance presents over 250 concerts, recitals, and dance performances each year. More information can be found on the School’s website at http://musicdance.sdsu.edu, by calling 619-594-1017, or by following us on Facebook or Twitter.
