Dean Cortez has a Bachelor of Science degree in Spanish from the University of San Diego, where he was the first U.S.D. student-athlete to receive a Cross Country scholarship. While a Torero, he earned First Team All-Conference Honors for three consecutive years. He also has a Master of Science degree in Physical Education and Coaching from Azusa Pacific University. Dean also spent ten years as a Personal Trainer and Group-Exercise Instructor. Additionally, he received top honors upon his completion at The Carrie Smith School of Dance and Coaching. This is Dean’s sixth consecutive year as the Assistant Coach of the San Diego State University Dance Team.
Dean has been a Spanish Teacher at Poway High School for 21 years. He is the former director of the Poway High School Dance Program in Poway, California. He began the inaugural Poway High School Dance Team. Under his leadership, the Jr. Varsity and Varsity teams won numerous prestigious awards at U.D.A. and U.S.A. Regional and National Competitions. Dean was also the Valedictorian of his graduating class while attending The Carrie Smith School of Dance and Coaching.
