Required Performance Repertoire, Voice
General Information for Vocal Auditions
- An entrance audition is required for admittance to all vocal degree programs.
- All music must be memorized.
- All music must be performed with an accompanist provided by SDSU. A $20 fee is required (check or cash).
- Repertoire requirements for freshmen, transfer and graduate students are listed below. The suggested repertoire lists are provided as guidelines only; you are not limited to the composers listed.
Incoming Freshman Repertoire Requirements
Please prepare two contrasting selections as follows:
- One selection, classical in style, in a foreign language (Italian, French, German or Spanish)
- A second selection either classical, folk or musical theater in style. Our program, as with most colleges and universities, focuses primarily on classical music.
- Italian songs or arias from the 17th or 18th centuries
- English or American art songs from any period, including folk music, (Dowland, Campion, Handel, Haydn, Purcell, Copland, Barber, Quilter)
- Any selection from the American Musical Theater repertoire (legit style verses belt is preferred). Operatic arias are not recommended.
- Suggested Repertoire:
Transfer Student Repertoire Requirements
Please prepare three contrasting selections as follows:
- One selection in English
- One selection in Italian
- One selection in either French, German or Spanish
- Three of the following style periods should be presented: Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary (20th and 21st Century)
- Italian songs or arias from the 17th or 18th centuries
- English or American art songs from any period
- German lieder of Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, Strauss;
- French arts songs of Debussy, Faure, Duparc, Hahn, Ravel
- Spanish art song of Granados, de Falla, Guastavino, Montsalvage
- Oratorio repertoire and light opera.

Masters and Artist Diploma Student Repertoire Requirements
Please prepare a minimum of six contrasting selections as follows:
- All of the following style periods should be presented: Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary (20th and 21st Century)
- Selections should represent all of the following languages: English, French, German and Italian
- Selections should represent both song (lieder/art song) and aria (opera, operetta, oratorio, cantata) literature
- All students pursuing a Graduate Degree in Vocal Performance or admission into the Artist Diploma degree and wish to be considered for a music scholarship must audition in person at SDSU. If you are not able to audition on the specified dates we will make best efforts to offer an alternative date.
