Description

   

SDSU Opera Theater

is a performing ensemble emphasizing training and performance of operatic literature, which may include scene programs, one-act operas, or full-length productions either with piano or orchestral accompaniment.

Musical coaching / rehearsal, staging, stage movement, character development & technical stage basic training, as well as basic costume/makeup/ prop training for singers is included.

All registered students will also be involved in performing (1) tech assignment.

The course also provides training possibilities for student coach/accompanists, and theater technicians such as Scenic / Lighting / Costume design and Stage Management.

Participation is by audition only.

Auditions

Auditions are held at the end of each semester for the following semester's production. This is essential for adequate personal time in preparing a role.

Schedule
Class rehearsals are M/W/F 4-6pm and are held in M250 and/or M20, as well as Smith Recital Hall, which is the main performance hall. Some Saturday rehearsals may be scheduled, and there is a set schedule for production week in the theater. A basic overall schedule is provided at the time of audition for each semester, and a specific rehearsal schedule is posted on the opera board weekly.


Performances
There may be 4-5 performances, depending on the production. These would consist of a Wednesday or Thursday Invitational Dress Rehearsal (at which time participants are provided (2) tickets), Friday & Saturday @ 7pm, and Sunday @ 2pm.

Units
Those selected to participate may register for either the (1) unit course: Opera Ensemble
Mus 170/370/570, the (2) unit course: Opera Theater Mus 184/384/584 , or combine the two courses for a total of (3) units. This is based upon the students involvement / work involved, and/or roles assigned.

Texts / Materials
Scores and study CD's of the current production are provided for a nominal use or purchase fee. Other handouts are provided free of charge. Costumes are provided. The participant must provide basic stage footwear & a basic stage makeup kit unless otherwise informed. Resource info on these items is provided.

Attendance / Preparation
This course is treated like a professional production. Attendance and preparation is absolutely essential for the success of the production. If you are unable to make a rehearsal you must call (619) 594-2878 in advance.

Grading
Grading is based 70% upon Rehearsals/Performance, and 30% upon level of preparation and class participation


Other Opportunities
Some performance / technical scholarships or stipends may be available. There may also be a Graduate Assistantship in Opera available.
Master classes in performance or audition technique may be available. In the Spring semester, participating students may be able to attend Dress Rehearsals at San Diego Opera.
