Dance 181 Introduction to Dance, This course covers the foundations of dance in Western civilization. Dance as art, therapy, ritual and social discourse. Dance will be viewed through live performances, film, and video with an appreciation for artistic intent, technique, and style.
Dance 382 Dance in World Cultures, Open to students who have completed the GE requirement in Foundations II.C, Humanities. Dance of selected cultures throughout the world investigated through aesthetic, geographic, social, and historical factors that have shaped the development and function of dance in society.
Music 151 Intro to Music: Concert Series, An introductory course that covers the elements of music as they are presented in various musical genres. This class features the very popular concert series - customized, live performances rather than textbooks! Students will experience professional ensembles of various musical styles as well as a number of ensembles drawn from the School of Music and Dance that feature talented SDSU students and faculty.
Music 151 Intro to Music: Classics, An introductory course that covers the elements of music as they are presented in various musical genres. Emphasis is primarily placed upon the repertoire of the Western tradition. If you’ve ever been curious about music from Bach to Beethoven to the Beatles, this is the class for you! This class will give you a lifetime of understanding and appreciation for the great works of a wide variety of composers and musical traditions.
Music 151 Intro to Music: Pop Music, An introductory course covering the elements of music as they are presented in popular music. An overview of rock and roll and chart-topping hits. This one fills fast, so register early!
Music 345 World Music in Contemporary Life A very popular GE course featuring a wonderful array of live performances featuring musicians and dancers of a variety of world cultures. The Concert Series you don’t want to miss and that you’ll never forget!
Music 351 Psychedelic Rock This course focuses on psychedelic rock music and culture of the 1960s. In addition to examining musical, social, political, and spiritual values of the hippie generation, students will develop critical listening skills through a close analysis of selected songs by rock bands associated with the countercultural movements of San Francisco, Los Angeles, and London. Music 351 Jazz in America Jazz is America’s singular contribution to the history of music and SDSU has one of the best jazz programs around! You’ll hear live performances and come away with an understanding of the significant literature and stylistic characteristics of this American music.
School of Music and Dance Code of Professional Ethics
Ensemble Audition Information:
Auditions for music ensembles are normally held during the first week of each semester. Please contact the specific ensemble director as listed in the Schedule of Classes to learn more specific information or visit the School main office.
International Experience Requirement:
Each music performance major in the School of Music who entered SDSU in the 2008-09 catalog year or later must complete an International Study requirement. Students who must complete this requirement should meet with professor Brent Dutton to learn more about how to develop a proposal for approval by the School of Music and Dance International Studies faculty panel (Professors Dutton, Conaty, and Rowe). PSFA also offers an international minor that may be used to fulfill this requirement.
