The graduate degree (Master of Arts) in piano pedagogy is unique to the region and California. Only two universities in the region offer these courses that prepare the pianist to teach in an independent studio or any other teaching environment. The piano pedagogy degree is nationally recognized and has attracted students from several states, Canada, Mexico, Europe, and the Pacific Rim. More than thirty-five percent of the members of Music Teachers Association of California, San Diego, who teach piano, have pedagogy degrees or courses that were completed through the keyboard division of San Diego State University.
The core courses in piano pedagogy provide a thorough preparation for teaching beginning students as well as intermediate and advancing piano students. All pedagogy courses include extensive information about the learner, teaching and practice strategies, teaching materials and curriculum, criteria for selecting repertoire, comprehensive musicianship that develops solo and ensemble repertoire, technique, sight reading, aural skills, theory, and creativity (improvisation and composition). Incorporating technology into the teaching environment is another fundamental aspect of the pedagogy program as well as the business of teaching piano that involves active participation in the music community and associations. The culminating project of the graduate degree in piano pedagogy requires detailed research of a pedagogical topic that is presented in a lecture recital or thesis. Many graduate students have the opportunity to become graduate teaching assistants to gain experience in teaching college class piano or to teach students of all ages in the SDSU Community Music School.
