The SDSU School of Music and Dance is celebrating our 75th Anniversary, and as a culminating event for the semester-long celebration, we are inviting alumni to come back and join us in performing a concert on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 in the Don Powell Theatre.
EVENT
The concert will open with the combined concert bands and alumni playing the Finale to Kalinnikov’s Symphony No. 1. The second half will feature the combined efforts of the Aztec Concert Choir, SDSU Chamber Choir, and SDSU Symphony Orchestra, and alumni performing Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, first performed 75 years ago.
HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE?
All alumni are welcome to join us in the celebration as we “Remember the Past & Embrace the Future”! All information for participating in any of the performing groups (bands, choirs, orchestra) can be found by clicking HERE.
The principal choral ensembles in the School of Music and Dance are the SDSU Chamber Singers and the Aztec Concert Choir.
SDSU Chamber Singers
The Chamber Singers (28-36 voices) is open to all majors who possess an advanced level of musical and vocal ability, and is auditioned at the beginning of each semester with year-round membership preferred, but not required. The audition will include a brief interview, vocalizing, sight-reading a short excerpt, demonstrating basic theory knowledge, and performing a short solo piece that best shows the qualities of the voice. Chamber Singers is the premiere choral ensemble on campus and strives to operate at a professional level on a daily basis. Previous high school choral singing is required and students must be able to read music at an intermediate level.
Please e-mail Dr. Patrick Walders at: (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and plan to sign up for an audition time on the M226 door on the Sunday before classes begin or the Monday of the first day of class in August/January.
Aztec Concert Choir
The Aztec Concert Choir (70-100 students) is open to all majors who possess a variety of musical and vocal ability, and is auditioned at the beginning of each semester. For the audition, sight-reading and knowledge of music theory not a requirement, allowing students with less experience an opportunity to sing in a collegiate choir. In the spring, the Concert Choir performs for the annual Kiwanis “Concert in the Park” at the Balboa Park Organ Pavilion.

The program is operated in a fully professional manner, with emphasis on tool/skill building and process assessment.
Graduate students majoring in voice are required to enroll in Opera and undergraduate voice performance majors must meet certain requirements by participating in opera during their program of study.
