The School of Music and Dance offers performance degrees in the following areas:
Brass instruments (trumpet, horn, euphonium, trombone, tuba)
Percussion
Piano
Stringed instruments (classical guitar, cello, violin, viola, double bass)
Voice
Woodwind instruments (flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon)
The performance program in music is available at both the undergraduate and graduate level to the most accomplished, talented, and committed students whose ambitions are to perform professionally, become highly skilled studio artist teachers, and/or to pursue higher degrees in music. All programs require an audition.
The Bachelor of Music in performance includes classes in music theory, music history, ensemble and chamber music performance, literature, aural skills, business of music, keyboard skills, conducting, and applied lessons. Additional music coursework is dependent upon the specific area of emphasis.
The Master of Music performance degree includes seminars in music theory, music history, ensemble and chamber music performance, music research, in addition to advanced performance studies. The program is reserved for the most highly gifted performers and is designed to provide experience and background needed for a career in performance and/or to embark upon doctoral study in music.
The Performer’s Certificate is a non-degree program open to skilled pre-professional performers who have not earned a university degree. It provides focused instruction in all areas of performance including technique, interpretation, repertoire, performing experience, and knowledge of the business of professional performance.
The Artist Diploma is a graduate level, non-degree program open to highly accomplished performers and provides focused instruction in all areas of performance including interpretation, stage deportment and communication, technique, repertoire, and knowledge of the business of professional performance. All interested applicants must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in music and may hold a graduate degree in music to pursue the Artist Diploma. Students may not simultaneously pursue the Artist Diploma and Master of Music degree.
