Melissa Nunn has made over 70 dances through a career spanning 8 years in Illinois and another 29 in San Diego. Her work has been presented with companies and festivals in California, New York, Illinois, Florida and Arizona, as well as in Mexico, China, Switzerland, Germany, England and France. She has performed with the Fusion Dance Eensemble, CitiDances, Richard Burrows, Dime-A-Dance, the Rincon Dance Collective, Elizabeth Swallow and her own projects. In recent years her professional work has been presented by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival, Cox Cable, Celebrate Dance Festival, Bodmin Riding, Dance Space Center, The Rincon Dance Collective, Dances for Two, the Festival of New Music, Ray at Night, Pasadena Quartet Pops, Mojalet Dance Collective and at the Theatre of the Beijing Music and Dance Ensemble. Much of this work has been supported, in part by grant awards from the California Arts Council, Commission for Arts and Culture and Las Patrons.
Music collaborations have included projects with Rob Mullins (8 commissions), David Ward-Steinman, John Flood, Bill Yeager, Omar Moore, Stephen Akina and Christopher Apple. Assistance for her touring with the University Dance Company has come from the Adams Humanities Foundation and the SDSU Office of International Programs. Melissa’s scholarly papers have been presented in Wingate, Israel, New Paltz, NY, Manila and Honolulu. From 1994-2002 she contributed to the development of interdisciplinary arts history/aesthetics coursework at SDSU addressing the relationships of dance to theater, music, visual art, biology, chemistry and astronomy. As a teacher, Melissa has received the campus-wide SDSU Outstanding Professor Award, a Mortar Board Outstanding Faculty Award, and has been selected Outstanding Professor in Dance six times. She has been an active contributor to the dance community over the years and was recognized by San Diego Magazine as co-founder of the San Diego Dance Alliance.
