Mindy Chu taught in a music school/program in Hong Kong this past summer. She has also been contracted to sing a group of Chinese songs recently presented on her junior recital for a major convention of Chinese corporations.
Cynthia Gutierrez (dance) was accepted into the McNair Scholars Program, designed to prepare participants for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. Cynthia plans to conduct research concerning inclusion of the performing arts in the K-12 educational curriculum. While working with children she will study the effects of teaching literature, history, science, and math through movement and the act of dance.
The Hausmann Quartet, named as the Joseph Fisch/Joyce Axelrod String Quartet-in Residence at San Diego State University performed in Shijiazhuang, the capital city of Hebei province in China this past September. Earline Peterson a student in the electro-acoustic music program has been getting blog buzz in Europe for her project Earleen Nada, a video of minimalist electro-pop and colorful music.
Tonnie Sammartano has been named Associate Artistic Director of trancenDANCE, which creates dance theater based on its teenage performers’ lives. Tonnie serves as mentor and coach to choreography development.
Three former Fellows in the California Music Project, Amber Gustafson, Joan Li, and Robin Guroff were recently hired as full time, elementary general music teachers in the Carlsbad School District.
Alex Blitstein (BFA ‘09) attended the Boulder Jazz Dance Workshop in Boulder, CO, September 2011 where he performed with their professional company
and taught workshops. He also taught a master class at Cornish School of the Arts in Seattle, WA.
Lara Segura (BFA ‘05) recently performed in “The Floating World” with Malashock Dance.
Keith Glassman (Dance program 1978-81) presented “Dancing with Ghosts,” as one of seven Los Angeles County choreographers commissioned by the Bootleg Dance Festival, Mar. 4, 2011, and “Timeless: Marxist Dances at the Beach,” May 16, 2011 as part of an Artist Residency at the Beach House, Santa Monica.
Brent Dutton and Westwind Brass recorded their 9th CD this summer to be released in November. The disc is comprised of arrangements and compositions by Dutton and is entitled “Dutton’s World Resounds.”
Travis Maril performed at both the La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest and the Mainly Mozart Festival, with soloists including Cho-Liang Lin, Jaime Laredo and James Ehnes. In September, 2011 he organized Stringissimo, an interactive conference for string students and teachers that featured Mimi Zweig, one of the country’s most distinguished violin pedagogues.
Pam Vliek Martchev performed with the San Diego Symphony and La Jolla SummerFest this past summer and recorded an upcoming CD with jazz trumpeter Chris Botti. This fall she is working with the Pacific Symphony and the San Francisco Ballet in Orange County.
Richard Thompson will present the world premiere of his original Concerto for Jazz Quartet and Orchestra with Orchestra Nova this November.
Enrique Torál will be performing this fall with Ann Baltz, founder and artistic director OperaWorks. OperaWorks is an ensemble that invents a custom opera recital made to order at the request of the audience.
Patrick Walders participated in a week-long workshop sponsored by the internationally renowned choir Anuna, based in Dublin, Ireland this summer. He also served on the faculty of the Chorworks Early Music Workshop in July 2011 at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC which focused on Iberian Renaissance composers. In addition, Walders conducted the semi-professional choir Voci per l’Arte.
