The World music program serves over 1,200 SDSU students each year. The program features a full range of ensembles, academic courses in world music, and a 10-concert World Music Series each semester. With emphasis given to the performance of music from different cultures, an M.A. degree in Ethnomusicology is offered. Native and native-trained instructors provide in-depth performance opportunities in ensemble playing and solo music from a variety of contemporary Asian, African, American, and European cultures.
On-campus ensembles include those devoted to the music of India (South),Indonesia (Java), Latin America (Cuba and Brazil), Africa (Ghana), China (classical), and Finland (folk). Additional teachers for private instruction include those trained in the music of Bali (gender wayang), Appalachia (banjo, dulcimer, shape-note singing), Zimbabwe (mbira), Cuba (bata), India (vina and sitar), Brazil (samba), Ghana (kete), Iran (tar, setar, zarb), and other cultures.
