Kevin Delgado is Assistant Professor and Coordinator of World Music and Ethnomusicology at San Diego State University. He teaches graduate seminars and undergraduate courses surveying a variety of musical subjects. A bassist and percussionist, Delgado also teaches performance ensembles and labs on Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian music, and in the Jazz Studies program he created and directed a Latin Jazz Ensemble. An alumnus of the SDSU School of Music and Dance, Delgado completed a B.M. degree in Jazz Studies in late 1993, and in 1994 he was named Outstanding Graduating Music Student and Outstanding Graduating Student/Commencement Speaker for the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts. Interested in the relationship between music and culture, Delgado enrolled in UCLA's prestigious Department of Ethnomusicology as a graduate student, earning both an M.A. (1997) and Ph.D. (2001) in ethnomusicology. In 1997, he also received the Graduate Recognition Award and was chosen as commencement speaker for the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. After earning his Ph.D., Delgado accepted an appointment of Assistant Professor of Music at Tulane University in New Orleans before accepting a position at SDSU the following year. In 2003, Delgado was honored by the School of Music and Dance as Music Alumnus of the Year. In 2004, he co-directed a SDSU Jazz Ensemble United States State Department Tour of Bolivia, and in 2005 was named to Who's Who Among American Teachers. Since 1996, Delgado has traveled to Cuba seven times to study and conduct research on Afro-Cuban music, religion, and culture. Delgado has presented papers at regional, national, and international ethnomusicology conferences since 1998, primarily on various aspects of Afro-Cuban music and culture. He is currently working on academic and scholarly publications based upon his research.
