Campus Information

San Diego State University is the oldest and largest higher education institution in the San Diego region and the second largest in the state of California. Founded in 1897, SDSU has grown to offer over 200 fields of study including bachelor’s degrees in 79 areas, masters degrees in 61, and doctorates in 13. Designated a “Doctoral/Research University-Intensive” by the Carnegie Foundation, SDSU is among the top 6.7 percent of higher education institutions in the United States.

SDSU provides a diverse learning environment and a positive campus climate in which students from many different backgrounds can grow and prosper. More than 45 percent of our students come from various ethnic, cultural, or linguistic populations. The campus brings together students from all states and from more than 80 other nations.

SDSU’s 300-acre campus provides both traditional and “smart” classrooms and laboratories, as well as on-campus housing. A state-of-the-art library, student union, recital hall, performing arts theatres, health center, modern recreation center and a 12,000-seat arena. The campus also maintains two observatories, public broadcast radio and television stations, and seismology and weather stations. With Division I NCAA athletics, a full palate of visual and performing arts events and a multitude of other opportunities outside the classroom, SDSU offers something for everyone.

San Diego State University is an integral part of the metropolitan San Diego region. SDSU is minutes from downtown, where the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Opera and numerous theaters are located. It is also easily accessible to Balboa Park, the second largest museum complex in the U.S., the international border, Old Town, beaches and numerous other attractions.
