Lynn Edington-Hogg transferred to the Department of Music at San Diego State “College” as an oboe major in the spring of 1968 and became a student assistant in the department “record library” that fall. At that time the department was located in the “old” building now occupied by The School of Communication. In the spring of 1970 most of the department moved into the “new” building leaving the “record library” alone in the old building for one semester! The following summer Lynn, two staff members and one other student assistant moved box by box, carefully by hand, each and every one of the recordings to the new building. It was great to have new turntables and cassette players in the 20 individual listening rooms. Two rooms also had reel to reel tape players! This new facility served the department needs as a listening facility for the next 20 years.
After graduating in 1972 Lynn became a part-time staff member. In the summer of 1987 she assumed the responsibility of supervisor of the record library. That same year she had begun to work with computers, not realizing at the time how valuable these “toys” were to become in such a short time. By the fall of 1990 the department had the funding to start a computer lab. This funding was for the equipment only, not for a new staff person. The solution was to place the lab inside the record library and have the staff person in charge manage both! This required Lynn to attend special workshops in music technology. Two summers were in Colorado, The Rocky Mountain Music Technology Workshop and one summer at the CSU Summer Arts - Music Technology For Film and Video workshop at Humboldt State University.
After 4 years in the record library it became necessary to move the computer lab to a much larger room. With just one staff member managing both areas on different floors of the building, this move required additional funding for student assistants.
In addition to attending many student recitals on campus, Lynn's favorite "off campus" activities include attending the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Opera, San Diego Lyric Opera and plays at the Lyceum Theatre. Much to Lynn's surprise is a newfound interest in cooking! Her husband, Merle, is also surprised and delighted. |
