AUDITION REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS

Undergraduate Repertoire Requirements

 

The student should prepare material that demonstrates skill on snare drum, timpani, and mallet instruments.  Plan to perform contrasting works that best demonstrate your technical ability and musicianship.

 

Students may also be asked to demonstrate fundamental skills in rudiments, scales, timpani tuning, sight-reading and accuracy in vocally matching short pitch sequences of 4-7 notes.

 

Instruments will be provided, however you will need to bring sticks, mallets, music and any instruments beyond a marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, glockenspiel, snare drum, and set of four timpani.

 

Applicants for admission on percussion should play pieces from each of the following three categories:

 

I.  Mallet Instruments
Solo, etude, or study demonstrating your best technical ability and musicianship for 2 or preferably 4 mallets

  • Scales: Students will be asked to play any of the major scales over two octaves on marimba or vibraphone.
  • Chords: Student will be asked to perform diatonic seventh chords from major keys over two octaves on marimba or vibraphone.

Suggested Repertoire for Mallets:

  • One movement or solo/etude from Stout, Abe, J.S. Bach, Creston, Musser, Rosauro, or equivalent. A 4-mallet solo is preferred.


II.  Snare Drum
Solo, etude, or study demonstrating your best technical ability

  • Demonstrate a long buzz roll soft to loud to soft

Suggested Repertoire on Snare Drum:

  • Portraits in Rhythm, Cirone.
  • Intermediate Snare Drum Studies, Peters
  • Standard Snare Drum Method, Podemski
  • 14 Modern Contest Solos, Pratt


III.  Timpani
Solo, etude, or study demonstrating your best technical ability

  • Demonstrate rolls, tuning; sight-reading.

Suggested Timpani Repertoire:

  • The Solo Timpanist, Firth
  • Fundamental Solos for Timpani, Peters.

Sight reading may be asked on any of the above instruments

 

Please bring three copy’s of your music for the audition committee.

 

Graduate and Artist Diploma Audition Requirements

  • Applicants should prepare a total of four pieces.  One each for snare drum, timpani, two and four mallets.  Plan to perform contrasting works that best demonstrate your technical ability and musicianship.
  • Please prepare three standard orchestral excerpts each on snare drum, timpani, xylophone, glockenspiel, and either tambourine or cymbals.
  •  
  • Please be prepared to demonstrate rolls, various rudiments, scales, arpeggios, and the ability to accurately tune pitches with an “A” tuning fork.  You will also be asked to read a short piece on several of the instruments.
  • Instruments will be provided, however you will need to bring sticks, mallets, music and anything beyond a marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, glockenspiel, snare drum, a set of four timpani, and cymbals.
  • Please bring three copy’s of your music for the audition committee.

Please feel free to bring your own snare drum, tambourine, or cymbals.
