Michael Fellinger was born and raised in Ft. Smith Arkansas. He earned a B.A. in Music Education in 1972 from Arkansas Polytechnic College (now Arkansas Tech University ), where he studied trombone with Andy Anders. He then worked towards a M.M. in Performance for two years at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Mass., studying trombone with John Swallow and John Coffey. He has also received private training from Arnold Jacobs, Edward Kleinhammer, and Frank Crisafulli of the Chicago Symphony, and especially Mark Lawrence, Principal Trombonist of the San Francisco Symphony. He was a member of the Fellowship Orchestra at the Berkshire Music Festival at Tanglewood, Massachusetts in 1974.

After studies at NEC, Mr. Fellinger spent three years as the Bass Trombonist and Co-Principal Trombonist of the Orquestra Sinfonica Brasileira in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he was also Professor of Trombone at Universidade Gama Filho and the OSB Preparatory Institute.
In 1978, he joined the San Diego Symphony Orchestra as Bass Trombonist and one year later became the Bass Trombonist of the San Diego Opera Orchestra. He continues in both positions today, as well as being a current and founding member of Helix Brass Ensemble.

In 1989 he completed his graduate studies, receiving his M.M. in Performance from San Diego State University, where he studied trombone with Dr. Merle Hogg.

He is married to Barbara Fellinger. They live with their two dogs, Barkley and Thumper, and have three grandchildren, all of whom are cute, adorable, and smarter than anyone else's.
