FACILITIES

 

The 78,000 square-foot music building, completed in 1970, includes a 300-seat recital hall, large rehearsal rooms for instrumental and choral ensembles, an electronic music studio, a 24-station multi-media lab, three class piano/computer labs, an audio/visual library with more than 14,000 discs, 54 individual practice rooms, 160 pianos including 4 9’ concert grands, 3 harpsichords and 800 other musical instruments many from different world cultures. The dance facilities are found in the Exercise and Nutritional Sciences Building (ENS) and include a large rehearsal studio and the 100-seat Dance Studio Theatre.

Performance Venues:

J. Dayton Smith Recital Hall

Located at the east end of the Music Building, the newly renovated Smith Recital Hall (M101) seats 300 patrons.  It has a large raised stage with a full set of theatrical drapes, motorized front drape, full sound/PA/recording system, cyclorama, computerized lighting system and sound shell.  The back-stage storage houses a full set of platform risers, choral risers, opera sets and sound equipment.

 

Dance Studio Theatre

Located on the 200 level of the ENS building, the newly renovated Dance Studio Theater (D200) seats 100 patrons.  It may be used in its entirety for rehearsals or converted to a fully equipped performing space with full theatrical draperies and computerized lighting system.

Located directly outside the Lobby for Smith Recital Hall the Music and Dance Box Office is open every day during the semester for pre-sale of tickets to both Music and Dance events.  Patrons may use cash or a credit card to purchase tickets.  Evening ticket sales for Smith Recital Hall events are also sold from this box office one hour before the event.  Evening ticket sales for the Dance Studio Theatre are available directly outside the Studio Theatre immediately before the event.

Located on the south side, main floor of the Music Building (M119) contains over 14,000 disc recordings, 600 tapes (audio and video) and a small number of reference materials.  The collection is accessed though a computer database housed in M119.    This collection of recordings is organized with the purpose of serving the needs of the School’s curriculum and contains recordings of the complete history of traditional Western European music, non-Western music, the history of American jazz and Afro-American Jazz, specific ballet and modern dance choreographies and historical dance videos.

The full music and dance collection is housed in the SDSU Love Library adjacent to the Music Building and consists of an extensive array of music and dance reference and research materials, periodicals and musical scores.  The bulk of the Music collection is housed on the fourth floor and the dance collection on the third floor. A large number of reference materials are located on the second level.  Unbound periodicals, newspapers, and microfilms are located on the first level.  A media and Curriculum Center on the fourth floor also includes a record and tape collection for general listening and facilities for viewing videocassettes.  The library also offers Inter-Library Loan Service for research and graduate projects.

The college of Professional Studies and Fine Arts Multimedia Lab is a joint facility of the School of Music and Dance, School of Art, Design and Art History, School of Communication and the Department of Theatre.  Located on the second floor of the Music Building the Multimedia Lab (M227) has 24 Macintosh platform workstations, 2 graphic scanning stations plus a teaching station.  Each workstation has Ethernet connections to the campus fiber backbone and its internet-capable.  The facility houses five printers.  All 24 stations have a MIDI synthesizer.

The continuously upgraded Studio is a full featured, state-of-the-art facility for the production of audio and integration with video. The centerpiece of the studio is Workstation #1: a 27 processor Pro-Tools TDM ACCEL engine connected to 5.1 surround speakers through a Mackie Digital X-Bus. Extensive Plug-ins include the WAVES Platinum mastering bundle. Ancillary equipment is Kurzweil K-2661S synhesizer/ sampler & MOTU Digital Performer.

Workstation #2 has an identical 27 processor Pro-Tools TDM ACCEL engine, connected through a 32 channel Mackie ONYX. Extensive Plugins include the WAVES Platinum mastering bundle. Ancillary equipment is Kurzweil K-2661S synhesizer/sampler & MOTU Digital Performer.

Outboard Mic. pres include Millennia HV-3D (8 channels).

Workstations #3 & #4 are identical, each based on Kurzweil K-2661S synhesizer/sampler & MOTU Digital Performer.

All workstations are Mac-powered (quad G5 & Intel).

Practice Rooms

  The bottom floor of the Music Building houses practice rooms which are available to all students enrolled in a music course.  Of these 40 rooms there are 32 which have a mix of acoustic upright and digital pianos.  Music Majors with an emphasis on piano are provided special practice rooms each with a grand piano on the second floor of the building.
