Opportunities for Solo Musicians and Ensembles

The SDSU Adams ' Project was founded in 1992 with the intent of giving student soloists and ensembles the training and experience necessary to commence careers as professionals. Since then, many student musicians have benefited musically, professionally, and financially from this highly successful program which places an equal emphasis on business and performance skills. Dr. Marian Liebowitz serves as faculty "booking agent" for this unique program and provides the following list to clarify the various levels of support available to musicians and the requirements needed to receive sponsorship.

Please note: Artists and ensembles are selected and placed at a specific level based on their skill level as performers and business people. Inclusion on the roster is not, however, a guarantee of employment. Applicants must be full-time SDSU music students, but ensembles may include non-SDSU students as long as these musicians do not constitute more than 50% of the ensemble.  The Adam's Project requires the artist/ensemble to fill out an application form and sign waiver forms each semester releasing the Adams ' Project and SDSU from any liability.

Entry Level Soloist/Ensemble:

For a soloist or ensemble ready to perform in a beginning professional arena, such as at the Starbuck's Coffee Shop, or as a background musician at a party.

Intermediate Level Soloist/Ensemble:

For a soloist or ensemble capable of performing a full sit-down recital in a community venue such as a senior residence.

Advanced Level Soloist/Ensemble:

Generally for the soloist or ensemble who have already performed many professional engagements. These artists are the backbone of Adams ' Project Series at Local Libraries, Senior Residences, and are featured performers in campus venues such as University House. These artists may also be booked for touring engagements in the U.S. and abroad. Ensembles may apply for Student Ensemble Residency status, which allows them to receive scholarship funding for a fixed number of musical performances. These artists are also represented at the Western Arts Alliance Annual Booking Conference and may be invited to attend at the expense of the SDSU Adams' Project as a means of providing a transition to a fully independent artist status.

Alumni Soloist/Ensemble:

In certain circumstances, the SDSU Adams ' Project will continue to provide support to Alumni soloists and ensembles who are in the transition phase to a fully professional status. This support may include representation at the WAA conference and booking support regionally and internationally during the initial 2-3 years after graduation for a soloist and 2-3 years after graduation for 50% of the membership of the ensemble.
